Area Description:
Peristerona village is a beautiful small village, located in a semi-mountainous region on the base of the Troodos Mountains and at about 300m above the sea level. It is about 8 km south of Polis Town and is easily accessible nowadays. The village has beautiful views to the sea [Chrysochous Bay] and Polis&Akamas area. Also the nearby [2km] Evretou Dam can be seen from some Peristerona locations.Peristerona derives its name from the word peristeri –meaning pigeon. Years ago there were thousands of pigeons living in the nearby spectacular "gorge of the eagles" which can be visited today for excellent photography.
The local economy is primarily agricultural and there are many small farm holdings still apparent.Peristerona is always a very green village due to the lush vegetation, and like most of the Polis area, is spectacular in the winter and spring months, and ideal for artists and photographers and people who like hiking. The local church is dedicated to St Mamas and is like most village churches located in the centre of the village.Next to the church you will find a pop art museum which is open daily. The area of Peristerona is also home of four other very old & small churches dedicated to St Theodoros, St George, St Zoni, The Holy Fathers.
